Carlton Fire Station

Carlton Fire Station

Carlton Fire Station in Nottingham was refurbished in 2010 and opened in early 2011, it was lit entirely, internally and externally, with Apollo Lighting luminaires.

The fire station houses more that 50 fire-fighters and support staff, it boasts a new computer suite allowing for internet-based training, gym and training facilities. All this was completed on time and under budget. It is going to form a hub of the community with areas such as meeting rooms available for local groups to use.

IT Suite

The building was specifically design to be energy efficient and is expected to gain 'excellent' accreditation under the 'Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method' (BREEAM) for fire stations. The building has already been awarded the Secured By Design certificate, the initiative which focusses on crime prevention at the design and layout stage of construction projects.

Gym

The challenge for Apollo Lighting was to achieve the efficiency required by BREEAM as well as making the spaces pleasant and aesthetically pleasing for the occupants. The external lighting had to consider nearby residential premises and provide a safe environment for the fire fighters to train on the external training ground.

External Training Area

The external lighting consisted of the main compound, training area, various car parks and perimeter lighting. The main compound was lit using metal halide floodlights with an asymmetric beam to reduce glare to adjacent buildings. There are compact fluorescent floodlights above the main gates which are only powered when the gates are being opened, this reduces the overall electrical loading and also reduces any spill light on to adjacent properties by the lighting only being used when it is needed. The same compact fluorescent floodlights are used above the appliance exit bay. The training ground was lit with both metal halide floodlights and with SON road lanterns, this was to give the fire-fighters the best scenarios for training as some roadways are lit with the low colour rendering SON lamps.

Locker Area

Internally, the corridors are generally lit with the Recessed Orbit fitting, which is one of the best selling fittings supplied by Apollo. The training suites, offices and gym are lit using the Reflex R giving a good overall illumination to the spaces including the vertical plane and walls.

The detailed design process carried out by Apollo Lighting proved invaluable in specifying the correct lighting in each individual space. Apollo worked closely with the contractor to ensure the installation was completed with minimal on site issue regarding the controls.
