Finance Department, University Of Edinburgh
Overview
Installed within the Finance Department of the University of Edinburgh, the are inside this listed building was formed as an Audio Visual Suite and is now used as a Meeting Room / Reception space.
The existing room, dimensions (20m x 15.5m x 10m at the top of the vault), used only six lighting points, each with a chandelier type GLS pendant. Apollo were asked to provide a design solution that would deliver 400 lux on the working plane, without the benefit of any additional lighting points due to its 'listed' status. The lighting also had to be controlable to allow for users to be able to change the illumination level.
Solution
As can be seen from the installation picture above, each of these existing points has a 5-way pendant Senator luminaire specially manufactured with a drop rod suspension and utilising 3 x 42w PLT lamps. All the lamps are operated on high frequency analogue dimmable control gear. Dimming is made possible by using our standard DC/100 dimming controller.
In addition to the Senators luminaires, Apollo also used 2x55w dimmable Gondolas mounted in the pelmet of the perimeter and also at high level. These serve two functions, to highlight the impressive ornate architectural ceiling and also to give atmosphere and perceived height to the space.
