King James Lights Up With Apollo
Overview
The most recent large project completed in this school by Apollo Lighting comprised of re-lighting the main hall, pupils dining area, corridors, staff room and various classrooms including the drama block.
Main Hall
The main hall is equipped with dimmable downlights mounted in suspended wooden panels. 2x42w PLT downlights are used to achieve the desired illumination level from the high mounting height. Some of the suspended panels are joined by a bridge, on the back of this bridge there are three single 58w T8 dimmable luminaires each of these has a different coloured over-sleeve allowing for a full colour change to be realised on the ceiling. Along the long walls of the main hall are dimmable 32w PLT adjustable scoop downlights giving the function to alter the mood of the space.
The control system used in this area is the Philips Multi-dim DALI system, more information can be found on our DALI Controls page. As this area has more than the 64 units allowed on a single DALI network, converters were added to the system. These converters change the DALI control signal in to DSI. These converters have two DSI outputs, allowing up to 25 ballasts to be connected to each channel.
Pupil Dining Area
The use of the dining area is multi-functional, it is used for dining during the day and access to the main hall for events in the evening. In this area Apollo used two different coloured prismatic shades on 2x42w PLT pendant luminaries to create the effect of a central area and perimeter. In addition to this, low voltage narrow beam downlights were used to highlight the walkway and perimeter in the hours of darkness.
Classrooms
The classrooms are illuminated using the Reflex R fitting, equipped with single 55w PLL lamps. These give an excellent distribution of light, both in the horizontal plane and just as important in a classroom environment, in the vertical plane. Some areas, where visual displays are not used we utilised the Recessed Orbit luminaire, this is another luminaire that offers excellent all round illumination.
Other Areas
The various corridors are illuminated using a mixture of the Nebula 3 downlight range and the Cyclone wall light, depending on the physical construction of the corridor, where there was no ceiling we used the Cyclone. Areas of interest, reception desks and also architectural details, structural columns are highlighted using the Nebula 8 with blue cones. In the Drama areas, the Recessed and Surface Orbit with special colour finishes were used. The design also included the sue of dimmable blue T5 fluorescent fittings to provide additional feature lighting.
