Leeds Met. University : Carnegie Sports Hall
Royal Philips Electronics in Partnership with Apollo Lighting, the luminaire designers and manufacturers, has installed a flexible lighting solution at the Carnegie Sports Hall based at Leeds Metropolitan University
Having recently been named as The UK Centre for Coaching Excellence for the 2012 Olympics and beyond, the University is committed to offering top class facilites to all its students and visitors using the centre. Philips was without doubt the ideal partner working with Apollo Lighting to enable the Carnegie Centre to maximise the use of their facilites.
In total, some 95 Apollo Multi Corso luminaires were installed. Designed specifically for multi-activity halls, the luminaire meets all the CIBSE LG4 recommendations. This, therefore, makes it ideal for the needs of international level sports since it achieves even illumination of the playing surface and high output with good vertical distribution.
To accommodate the individual needs of Carnegie Sports Hall the Apollo Lighting Multi Corso luminaire was slightly modified to take the Philips T8 Xtreme Secura lamp and gear system. With a guaranteed long lifetime of 75,000 hours this offers significant benefits in reduced maintenance costs particularly for installations with difficult-to-reach, high ceiling. Closing down the sports facility would cause severe disruption to events and training programmes but by using long lasting solutions, replacement can be planned in advance, virtually eliminating spot replacing premature failures. In addition, the lamp and gear system offers up to 25% energy savings on yearly running costs when compared with electromagnetic systems. A further feature of the Xtreme Secura lamp is its special coating which ensures that should breakages occur, glass fragments can be contained effectively.
Most importantly, the Philips HF Xtreme gear was supplied with 3 separtately switched fused circuits to allow a choice of 3 illuminance levels to be achieved. Whilst an average of 750 lux is necessary for national level this can be reduced to 500 lux when playing at club level and further still at recreational level where an average of 300 lux is sufficient.
As David Whittington, Engineering Officer of Estate Services, Leeds Metropolitan University points out, "The lighting had to be multifunctional. For national level sports events the illuminance levels had to be such that players and spectators can easily see boards, distances and balls in flight at various heights. However, for club and recreational levels the high light output wasn't quite so critical. Incorporating the Philips T8 Xtreme Secura Long Life Lamps and gear system into Apollo Lighting's Multi Corso fitting gave us just the flexibility in illumination levels we were looking for."
