Stirling University Sports Apollo Luminaires
Overview
This two court tennis centre located at the University of Stirling was re-lit in early 2006. The lighting installation had to comply with LG4 and also guidelines set down by the Lawn Tennis Association. The Lawn Tennis Associtation stipulates the calculation ares and levels that should be achieved.
Specification
The tight specification of illuminating a tennis court means the designer has to work very to exacting guidelines regarding calculations and physical aspects of the area.
Many aspects are covered by the guidelines and have to be taken into account, some are listed below:
- Average illumination levels on Principle Playing Area (PPA) and Total Playing Area (TPA)
- Uniformity of PPA and TPA
- Number of calculation points when using computer aided design programs
- Mounting constraints, height, relative position to court etc..
- Physical aspects of area, surface reflectances, maintenance etc..
Only when all the above are correct can the design calculation be used to proove the installation will work.
Solution
Apollo Lighting have worked closely with customers to develop the Tennis Corso. The Tennis Corso is designed to meet all the criteria when used to illuminate indoor tennis courts. The angled body and reflector system works in a very effective way ensuring the correct illumination and uniformity are reached with the luminaires mounted according to the limitations of the recommendations.
This scheme posed further problems as the ceiling height near the rear of the courts dropped down below the ideal mounting height of Tennis Corso, meaning the installing contractor had to alter the height of the trunking the luminaires were mounted on.
Results
As with other tennis centres that Apollo Lighting have supplied the design and products for, the resulting installation complies with every aspect of the specification and also the recommendations.
Even the clients using the spaces lit with the Tennis Corso have commented that their game has improved as they can now see the ball properly and with out glare.
