Lighting controls in classrooms are becoming more common place, allowing the teacher to dim the luminaires down so that it is easier for the pupils to see the interactive white board or blackboard. There is usually a great deal of daylight in a classroom so the addition of daylight linking can also be employed for maximum energy savings.
These systems should be easy to use and should offer a standard solution throughout the whole school so that if a class is moved for any reason, the teacher will know how to control the luminaires in the different location.
A typical classroom layout could consist of 12 light fittings with the white board at one end. The occupancy detection should take the form of absence detection, this means that if, for example, a child quickly enters the space to retrieve forgotten belongings and immediately leaves again, the luminaires will not switch on.
A switch is placed at the main entrance door and one near the white board. A 7 button switch is usually used which gives a choice of four scenes, off and also a fade up and dim down button. The scene list could be as follows;
- Scene 1 - All on, general use setting with daylight regulation
- Scene 2 - Low level, general setting with luminaires on a dim setting
- Scene 3 - White board lighting, luminaire or luminaires nearest the white board off
- Scene 4 - Presentation scene, luminaires at front on full and rest on a low level, highlighting the front of the classroom
Detectors used in a classroom can have daylight regulation, automatically dimming the luminaires to a suitable level whilst maintaining the illumination level on the desk. This can be programmed to control either the window row or all the rows at different levels.
An infrared remote control can also be supplied to replicate the operation of the 7 button switch. There is a receiver in each switch and in each detector, dependant on the detector.
