Lighting Control Systems in typical Lecture Theatre environments.
Apollo Lighting have supplied many lecture theatres in many different environments, from educational establishments to training facilities in hospitals and many others. With this experience, our designers can offer a full control system which interfaces with third party systems such as AV systems and BMS.
The standard lecture theatre layout tends to consist of luminaires in rows across the area run parallel going away from the teaching area at the front of the room. Some installations also use spotlights to highlight the teaching area while keeping the illumination on the projector screens to a minimum.
The controls consist of microwave presence detectors mounted at the top of the seating area, these function to bring the luminaires on when the users enter the space. They also turn the lights to either a minimum or off scene once the area has been unoccupied for the delay time programmed in to the system.
As the luminaires can be switched off from the control system, the presence detection is disabled to stop false triggering whilst the users of the space want the luminaires to be off. Presence detection mode is returned to normal once the detector has not detected movement for the time delay.
There are switches at the entrance doors and one at either side of the teaching area at the front of the room. The switches control up to 8 different scenes (including an off scene), these are used when the AV system is not being used. To control the spotlights, there is usually a set of four sliders which override the levels of the individual spotlights.
Various different scenes can be programmed in to the system during commissioning. Usually, scene one is a general setting, the other scenes then gradually decrease in level from front to back. The luminaires over the projection screen tend only to be used in the general scene unless the end user requires a different setting.
Third Party System Interface
The most popular way of interfacing with the AV system is by using volt free contacts. Apollo Lighting supply a small input unit capable of accepting up to four relay closures, the majority of AV systems have relay contact outputs to which the input units are connected.
Apollo Lighting can provide systems which also interface with RS232, DMX, Ethernet I/O. To interface with building management systems, Apollo Lighting can interface with OPC for BMS or supply Tridian drivers for Tridian developers to integrate the lighting system with other systems.
